One of the ways you can help the shelter animals is by placing an ad in our gala journal. This beautifully designed book will reach so many in our community. Place an ad for your business, a congratulatory message, or spotlight an animal at the shelter. This is also a wonderful way to express a heartfelt remembrance of a special person or pet.
Please call 914-941-2896, ext. 22, or email Lisa@spca914.org for more information about the event, auction, journal and sponsorship opportunities.
Dogs from Puppy Mill and Mississippi Get Second Chance at SPCA
One might say that there are enough animals in our own backyard to rescue, rehabilitate and love - why would we take in animals from another state? Though we normally don't extend beyond Westchester to assist homeless or abused dogs and cats - we have assisted several out-of-state rescue groups in saving animals from life-threatening situations or euthanasia.
Homeward Bound, a dog rescue group begun by two Mississippi State University veterinary students, transports puppies from shelters in the south, where overpopulation leads to euthanasia of perfectly healthy animals, to shelters in the north where the chance of adoption is high. Since the SPCA has accepted Homeward Bound puppies and dogs, there has been a 100% adoption rate.
In June, rescuers asked the SPCA of Westchester to help with several adult dogs and puppies that were taken from a puppy mill in Pennsylvania. These animals have never known life beyond a too-small cage. While the puppies were less timid, the mother dogs suffered from fear of mistreatment, inhumane confinement and over-breeding. One of these dogs, Dora, has won the hearts of staff and volunteers alike. When she first arrived, Dora would not make eye contact and was not motivated by food. Her thin body spoke volumes about the
abuse she had suffered and the many litters she has "produced" for her owners before the age of two. Today, Dora visits the SPCA volunteer cottage with warm greetings for anyone around. The reward of watching her regain her trust of humans is priceless. If you are interested in adopting a companion animal, please call the SPCA at (914) 941-2896 or to look at dogs and cats waiting for forever homes, please click on "See Our Animals" at left.
